My experience with Thumbtack Hvac
i thought thumbtack would be a good place to get repairs done for my moms house. So I recently had a new A/C install which I shelled out 8.5k to a so called pro1 . The units they installed were a 410 Bryant Legacy 2.5 T and 3.5T and new coils for the blower. My mom calls me and tells me that the a/c is not blowing cool a week later.
As a precaution I hired pro 2 to check out why the A/C went off the following week. He told me the drain pans were not replaced and should have been since they were rusted and some blown capacitor in side the blower was causing the a/c to not work. I agreed to repairs and paid another $600 for two drain pans and 150 for a repair for the capacitor. The second so called pro also agreed to install a nest thermostat.
I called my mother and wanted to make sure she can change the temp on the nest app. We proceed with the setup and then the nest tells me we have no power to Rc wire . I called pro2 and he told me he will be out of town and can’t come back the next day. So I then call another pro and they tried to charge me 550 to install a thermostat. I laughed and took the 3 hour trip to get my moms a/c working.
When I arrived I get to work. I walk up to the attic and see that pro 2 left the drain pan up there, I found out why the a/c thermostat was not working and it was due to lose wires on the blower control board. I also noticed that there was a wire not plugged into the 24v transformer near the blower. I also proceeded to check the internals of the blower. I noticed that the cap that was supposed to be replaced looked kind old. Maybe he meant he replaced a fuse and charged me $150 for that who knows.
I proceed to install the thermostat downstairs and to my surprise I see that the c wire is not hooked up. The thermostat downstairs was hooked up by pro1. whatever Right? I proceed to hook up the c wire to the nest and went upstairs and hooked up the c wire to the downstairs a/c blower.
I wait a few hours and I see that the house is not cooling. I go outside and feel the pipe on the outside unit it’s not as cold. I read that the system is not charged properly and using the formula from the manufacturer manual ,I estimate that it’s missing 2lbs .At this point I had enough I call a real hvac company and they told me the system is undercharged by 2 lbs each unit. I paid 300 to get it charged up.
All in all my experience with thumbtack for HVAC repair in houston has been horrible and will not be using them again.
