A reminder that Cornerbacks aren’t worth a top 5 pick in the modern NFL

Never take a CB top 5 in today’s game. This isn’t 10-15 years ago where having only 1 lockdown corner was good enough to make your defense better.

The corner backs drafted in the top 5 recently were Ramsey, Ward, and Okudah.

Browns drafted Ward, but they’ve done nothing on his rookie deal and now made him the highest paid cornerback. The jags didn’t even keep Ramsey so that’s a wasted pick. Okudah is a bust.

The browns defense is what it is because of Myles Garrett not Ward. The rams defense is what it is because of Donald and Miller last year and Donald every year before that, not Ramsey. The jags defense was what it was because of their pass rush. The lions swung and missed and it’ll set them back years.

Stop with cornerbacks being worth a top 5 pick. They’re not really valuable if they don’t have a pass rush making the quarterback make a quick decision or force a throw off balance. Remember, with a quality pass rush we only need above average cornerback play. Without pass rush, the secondary will be picked apart no matter who’s there.

Build from the trenches first and then draft a cornerback later in the first round this year. There are plenty of good prospects that would immediately make an impact.

Edit: I’m fine with drafting a CB like McDuffie or etc. with our 13th pick or even trading up to 8-10 if sauce or Stingley falls. Just not ok using a top 5 pick on a CB as value wise it doesn’t make sense.
