Racism in downtown Houston
I’m aware that what my post is probably going to receive backlash and that the subject is sensitive, but it needs to be addressed.
My wife is a third generation Vietnamese-American. She started a new job downtown this past year and she is uncomfortable walking between the parking garage and her office (2 blocks away). She has been called racial slurs and followed from the office exit to the parking garage multiple times. The racial slurs are frequent, roughly twice a month.
Just this month, she has been called “pancake face” and “Ms. China! China! China!” And the perpetrator has been the same description in every occurrence. Young to middle age Black male in casual clothes.
My wife is petite and I’m doubtful that she could defend herself if she was assaulted. We have tried our best to address what we can. She parks as close as possible to work, she doesn’t wear nice jewelry, she always walks in groups when possible, she has mace in her purse, etc. She can’t walk with other employees because shift times are spread out. I would walk her to her office if I didn’t work on the other side of town.
What else can I do to improve her security and why is she being targeted by black males? Again, I know this is a touchy subject that’s why I’m posting anonymously, but it is what it is. I honestly didn’t think this would be such an issue in the most diverse city in America. Thanks.
