Wish He Was Still Here, but the Twins Gave Correa a Horrible Contract

I really wanted the Astros to resign Correa, but I’m glad we didn’t give him that contract. I can’t think of a worse short term deal than what the Twins gave him.

Yes the Astros could have matched what the Twins gave him, but so could a lot of other teams and they didn’t. There’s a reason for that.

The Twins essentially signed Correa to three 1 year deals. If he has a good season in year 1, he’s gone and you just paid $35M for a 1 year rental. That would be an incredible amount for 1 year and would blow the doors off the record amount a team has paid for a 1 year rental. If he’s still there in year 2, that means he doesn’t think he can secure the big long term deal he wants. That means he was either hurt in year 1 or he underperformed. Either way, the Twins will have overpaid. If he’s still there in year 3 it means he was hurt/underperformed in years 1 AND 2 and they’ve now overpaid for him for 2 years. And then no matter what he does in year 3, he’s gone.

The upside for the Twins on a deal like this is basically non existent. He plays well and immediately leaves or he underperforms and stays. That’s not a contract any team out there wants a part of.
