Career in welding

I'm a senior in high school about to graduate in 3 months…. I've been looking into the welding industry since I got a full ride scholarship for a welding program in a community college located in Houston…. San Jacinto College to be exact. My main focus/goal is to work in plants/refineries, I drive by them all the time and see welders and it catches my attention. The scholarship will pay for everything… schooling, tools, equipment, gear, and etc. Before I take that chance and pursue a career in welding I wanted to come here and ask you folks who have been in the field/lifestyle of welding.

How is it? Job opportunities? Is it a good demanding career? Is Houston a good location to be a welder? (I know there many plants/refineries down here in Houston so does that mean there would be more job opportunities? ) How's the pay? (Salary) Benefits?

I don't know much about this industry, but I'm definitely willing to learn. Anything will help…. thank you!
