Whats going on with crime in Houston post 2020?

Hey folks, I lived in Houston from 2019 to mid 2020 and loved it (pandemic aside) and now I'm moving back due to work opportunities.

My original plan was to rent where I lived before at first then look at nicer places since I'm married now. One thing I didn't expect (and I'm utterly shocked at) are the crime stories in all review pages I look at. Even the place I was renting (a so called "luxury complex") that used to have a 4.7 rating on Google now shows multiple counts of crime and rating dropped to 3.9. What's going on?

Everywhere that rents 1 Bed / 1 bath under 2k/month (which is already out of my budget) even in nicer parts of the city seem to be riddled with car break-ins, wheel/cat converter theft or even apartment unit break-ins.

Even though I know Houston is a huge city and that implies increased crime I wasn't expecting such a sudden change, that's why I chose to come back. i loved Houston and this wasn“'t expected at all.

Is it really going to be me having to spend over my budget on rent to try and have some peace of mind that I wont wake up to my car on blocks before having to get to the office?
