Houston-area school districts have seen a surge in requests to ban certain library books, many of which explore issues of race or have LGBTQ+ characters.

Some longtime Houston-area educators have said they have never seen a push to remove books with the intensity of efforts in the last six months.

“The larger impact it’s having is it’s beginning to question the ability of educators,” Alief ISD Superintendent H.D. Chambers said. “It’s creating some concerns about what should or what could or what are we allowed to talk about or what are we allowed to share at the risk of being criticized or, in some cases, violating a piece of legislation that’s been passed. It creates this confusion with the adults who are in place to try to help students navigate their educational — both their academic, social-emotional — lives.”
