On this day in 1861, Sam Houston, was expelled from the office of Governor of Texas for refusing to take a loyalty oath to the Confederacy when Texas seceded against his wishes.

Houston, who was also a protégé of Andrew Jackson, an Indian agent, Tennessee governor, and president of the Republic of Texas, retired from public life and died soon after, having never witnessed Texas’ re-admittance to the Union.

Houston was the only person elected to governor in one state (Tennessee), then elected president of a foreign country (the Republic of Texas), then elected governor in another state (Texas).
