Does DPS keep your old ID when applying for license?

I am applying for a first time drivers license and have my current TX ID (non expired) that I will take as proof for "identity". However I still desperately need to keep my ID as I use it every day, that is until the plastic (not temporary paper) DL comes in the mail 6 weeks later (or who knows when). And no, the temporary paper they give will not get me through for my situation. So, does DPS confiscate your old ID when renewing/applying?
