Closest place to decently stargaze/meteor watch?

What is the best or closest place to watch a celestial dark sky event such as an asteroid shower from to Houston? I know Enchanted Rock is highly rated but trying to keep the travel within 1.5 hours as a decent trade off to night sky. Any suggestions?
