Comparing Rookies (Perspective)
This Sunday I’m expecting a bloodbath. Davis Mills against the only undefeated team with an OLINE where we have 3 starters out won’t be pretty.
However, I wanted to just bring some reality to the situation. Here are the completion percentages for all rookies this year. Granted, some have played all 6 games but just looking at completion percentages – Davis doesn’t look that bad:
- Mac Jones 211 AT 71.1% (1,472y)
- Trevor Lawrence 216 AT 59.7% (1,465y)
- Zach Wilson 171 AT 57.3% (1,117y)
- Davis Mills 139 AT 63.3% (912y)
- Justin Fields 99 AT 53.5% (632y)
- Trey Lance 48 AT 52.1% (354y)
In think we can all agree, that except for Mac Jones the rest of these completion percentages are quite poor. I know a lot of people think Mills has lots of placement issues but compared to other rookies playing, he ranks number 2.
We’re going to see a horrible game this Sunday, but let’s remember he’s still a rookie and comparatively he’s right in the middle of the pack of rookies that were selected in the first round.
I want to see Mills pass more and I want to see him throw passes over 20 yards, not just short screens. We’re likely to be playing from behind the whole game so it makes sense to let him show off that arm.
Also, Happy Birthday to Mills. I hope Watt doesn’t destroy him this weekend. I can’t consume enough alcohol in order to stomach watching Driskel play.
