When did late-night electric scooters get so popular downtown?

For the last two weeks, I had a big project and worked into the night in my downtown office for the first time since March 2020 or so. When I would leave around 10 or 11 PM, I was surprised to see that there were dozens and dozens of people tooling around downtown on electric scooters on weeknights, and that there were scooter rental places popping up in the parking lots around Toyota Center. I had no idea this was a thing.

Anyone take part in this? Is it fun? How did this develop?
