Looking Ahead: Quarterback options for the future discussion. Free free to discuss guys you feel should be considered options or tell me how wrong I am about certain prospects
Currently in the league (trade, free agency) :
Jimmy G : Effective pocket passer if supported by a solid offensive line and run game. Has a history of injuries but how much of that is him and how much does it fall on the 49ers as that team has been plagued with injuries for several years now. Could be a possible Tannehill-esque option if the Texans don't want to use a first on a quarterback if 2022 class looks weak come the end of the CFB season.
Tyler Huntley: A surprise of the preseason. Put up 5 TD's against the Washington defense. Undrafted out of college due to playing for the enterally irrelevant University of Utah. Plays in a similar style to Lamar Jackson so while his accuracy might not be elite, some time with Pep Hamilton might further his development. Will be a free agent next year so he can be gotten for CHEAP which presents little downside if he doesn't pan out but massive upside if he does
Draft: (This is subject to change depending on his performance in the 2021 CFB year)
Spencer Rattler: OSU Quarterback who will be eligible in the 2022 draft. Being an OSU guy suggests that while he looks good in college, will probably be average in the NFL. While his alma matter will make him a first round pick, he is hardly worth "tanking" for and hasn't shown anything that makes him worth trading up for either.
Kedon Slovis: Future USC bust QB, looks good on highlights but puts up Josh Rosen numbers. Will most likely be a first round pick but anyone looking at him in the draft should be wary due to USC quarterbacks having a history of completely underperforming on the professional level
Sam Howell: Looks like Trubisky, plays like Trubisky, plays in the same school and system as Trubisky. Nothing more to be said
D'Eriq King: Undersized like Kyler "Midget Man Murray" but without the speed, elusiveness or arm talent. Already has a history of betraying the city of Houston so his integrity is suspect like a certain other Texan quarterback. Hasn't shown anything that would make him a high first rounder or worth trading up for if taken in the draft.
Not Options:
Deshaun Watson;: He is gone, get over it
Davis Mills: While his development is hard to gauge because of preseason (most of the people he played with were cut, etc) I don't see him getting a real shot unless Tyrod gets injured and he has to step in. If he doesn't show improvement he has no future with the Texans (or anyone else)
Tyrod Taylor: Good solid backup option for the future but he doesn't have what it takes to be the number one beyond the current season
Tua Tagovailoa: While Steven Ross might not be hot on him much to the chagrin of the Dolphins coaching staff, Ross has been essentially shamed into keeping him due to fan and coaching staff backlash. He isn't going to be traded unless he completely bombs this year which would make him not worth trading for anyways should that be the case
Cam Newton: Never had back to back winning seasons. Charismatic in the locker room but lacks real leadership qualities. Long history of injuries, unstable behavior and self sabotage
