How is living in east downtown like compared to living in Durham (the area from around W 17th street to near memorial drive)?

I’m moving to Houston soon, and I’m looking for apartments. I’m not too familiar with the east downtown area. How does it compare to the area near Durham drive (not sure what that area is called)?
