Daily dose of Yordan (Game 118)
Today's statline: 1-3, RBI, DP
At bat 1 (Top of first): 4 pitch single to left, RBI
The at bat started with Yordan watching a borderline fastball high and tight for strike one. After that borderline call, Yordan watched another fastball, this time middle and insider, for a ball, and then took another ball on an inside offspeed pitch in the dirt to pull ahead 2-1. Down in the count, Hernandez (the starting pitcher) needed to throw Yordan something in the zone, and he ended up throwing a high fastball to Yordan right in the zone, which you simply can't do. He smashed it to the opposite field for an easy RBI single that scored Altuve for the first run of the game. Good at bat here by him to take what the heavily shifted defense gave him and to hunt out a specific pitch that he excels at vs the pitcher. He would not score, as Gurriel grounded out to end the inning.
At bat 2 (Top of fourth): 3 pitch double play to pitcher
The at bat started with a soft fly ball foul by Yordan off a curve right down the middle. He then watched a noncompetitive fastball to even the count. Then, on a 1-1 count, he swung at a fastball right down the middle, but unfortunately hit just a slow one-hopper right to the pitcher, who easily threw to second to start the double play.
At bat 3 (Top of sixth): 4 pitch groundout to shortstop
Yordan watched a fastball and a slider, both outside and out of the zone by quite a bit, to work himself ahead 2-0. He then watched another fastball high in the zone for a questionable called strike one, and then got a changeup high but in the zone. He got off a lazy swing and hit a routine ground ball to the shifted shortstop for the easy out.
Yordan was pinch hit for in the eighth by Taylor Jones, which I thought was kind of questionable because it was a close game and Yordan mashes righties with unintimidating stuff like Barlow. Jones hit a double after a great at bat though, so what do I know.
