Houston City Beat: Have you tried Veneno Tequila?

Andro:Kano, the Urban Ambassador for Houston City Beat, met up with Miguel Alanis, Senior Sales Director with Veneno Tequila. They had a great conversation that included tequila 101, where it comes from, how to enjoy it, and specifics about what makes Veneno Tequila a must have at home or at your favorite restaurant or bar.

Below is a transcript of some of the conversation…

Andro:Kano: I want to introduce you to Miguel Alaniz. Thank you for coming out. Tell us what is tequila?

Miguel Alanis: Tequila to some people it’s amazing and to other people it’s bad headaches. I educate people that this is not your college tequila. We are an ultra premium tequila. What is tequila? It is a distilled Spirit made from the sugars of the agave plant. We know that Agave is healthy for you, so in reality, tequila is healthy for you, in moderation. There are a lot of distilled Spirits out there. It just depends on where it comes from and what region it comes from dictates the notes.

Andro:Kano: Does tequila come from an actual plant? Is it a cactus?

Miguel Alanis: It’s not a cactus, it’s an agave plant, it’s very beautiful. It takes seven years for it to mature. Mexican law says that you cannot cut it. You cannot make it into tequila until it’s seven years old. So we have plants out there that are five to nine years old before they’re cut. They have to wait seven years before they take the round part, the Pina, and ferment it to make it into tequila.

Andro:Kano: What is the difference between Blanco, Anejo, Silver

Miguel Alanis: Everybody starts tequila with the Silver, aka the Blanco. The Blanco is not aged. It is only fermented. The next step is that you age it in barrels which is what is called a Reposado. To be able to call it Reposado, by Mexican law, it must be aged between 2 months to one year in barrels. After 2 years its aged from 1 to 2 years and is called Anejo. Anything over 2 years is called Extra Anejo. We have a product that is aged 7 years.

Venono Tequila is produced in small batches . We’re not like one of the mass-produced tequilas.

We have our own Hacienda, which is a farm/ranch, where we grow our own agave. Our Master Distiller, actually, handpicks the Agaves to be used in the tequila process. He also signs every bottle. We take our time to create each bottle.

There are two areas that produce tequila. The North and South Highland. The volcanic ash ground is what dictates how the Agave is going to taste, which dictates how the tequila is going to taste.

Anything grown in the lowland is going to be earthy, spicy and peppery, with a kick. Agave grown in the Highland, like Venom Tequila, is sweet, smooth, citrusy, and floral.

Andro:Kano: How should we drink tequila?

Miguel Alanis: We use salt and lime to kill our palette. In Mexico, we don’t shoot our tequila. We sip it, we shoot it every once in a while, but the good tequila’s are sipped in a nice low glass with an orange slice and cinnamon.

The good stuff will get the orange slice.

We take a sip, we take a bite of the orange so that opens up our pores in our mouth so you can taste more of the notes of the tequila. The good tequila is made to enjoy it.

We have better tequila in the market now than a few years ago so we can create great cocktails that you can make with the Tequila’s. It has changed the game for tequila drinking. We don’t have to shoot this. This is actually smooth. You can take and enjoy it with your beer, or even with your whiskey. Tequila, has evolved from a simple concept of taking a shot to mixing drinks with tequila that didn’t even incorporate tequilas a few years ago.

Andro:Kano: The question of the day, what is Venom Tequila?

Miguel Alanis: We are Texas owned texas-based. Our distribution is in Texas, the owners live in Texas. Our warehouse is in Texas, we are Texas Proud. All of our Tequila’s are made in Mexico. Venom Tequila, is made over there. But we have a footprint here in Texas.

The bottle presentation is beautiful. The bottle is high class and stands out. It’s a simple product that tastes just as good as it looks.
