View from an outsider (if you care)
So I won’t lie, I’m an outsider in the sense that I’ve just come back to Texas. I was born near Fort Worth, but due to situations out of my control as a new born, my family moved out of state to NY shortly after I was born. So I can’t say that I’m a “real” Texan but I’ve always felt some sort of weird pride being able to say that I was born in Texas. I spent 20 plus years living in upstate NY but this post isn’t going to be advice from a northerner about the cold.
The point of this post is to say that I’ve only been down here living in Houston since the summer. And so far I’ve seen a guy who owns a mattress store do more for common people than any of the government representatives that were elected and expected to step up in these awful situations. Ted Cruz literally fled the state and was bullied on social media enough to come back. While Mack opened his doors and said “if you need help come on in”. I’ve seen so much stupidity within the state government here that when you look at someone like Mattress Mack, it really makes you wonder where the f**k did it go wrong.
In my mind, Mattress Mack is the perfect example of what Texas should really be about. It seems in situations where he could step back and say “you know, this really isn’t my problem” he does the exact opposite and goes above and beyond for people that can’t repay him. I know this sounds a little corny and over posted but please watch out for your neighbors if you can. It’s proven time and time again that the state officials don’t have whatever Mattress Mack has within him. He’s the perfect example of what a true Texan is. He hasn’t directly helped me but if I could shake his hand and tell him that he’s the man, I would. I hope somehow people can show him how much he means to this community, because even from an outsider point of view who hasn’t been here long. He’s killing it.
Remember all of this during the next elections. Remember who ran to Cancun (and then publicly threw his daughters under the bus the second he was confronted in person) while the majority of Texans sat in the cold.
