It’s unclear what Schultz could be dealing with. He didn’t appear to be hurt at any point against the 49ers and played until the game’s final snap. Though some signs could point to the team’s starting tight end being injured. Houston signed tight end Dalton Keene to its practice squad on Wednesday, releasing running back Jawhar Jordan, who shined in the preseason, in a corresponding move. The team also designated Jakob Johnson to return from injured reserve ahead of practice, and the fullback was seen taking reps with the tight ends on Wednesday.

Missing Schultz for any period of time would be a big loss for the Texans’ offense. He’s the team’s leading pass catcher with 32 receptions, and his 308 receiving yards are second behind Collins. His absence would also be compounded by a thin tight end depth chart, as Houston has already lost backups Cade Stover and Brevin Jordan.

Without Schultz, Harrison Bryant is the only tight end on the team’s active roster. Other candidates to help fill in would be Johnson and practice squad members Keene and Luke Lachey. Only Johnson has more than five career catches among the latter three, and he hasn’t caught a pass since 2023.
