9-year-old girl ‘executed,’ mother injured during shooting involving woman’s ex-boyfriend in Heights area

HOUSTON – A search for a suspect is underway after a 9-year-old girl was killed and her mother was injured during a shooting carried out by the woman’s ex-boyfriend in the Heights Monday night, Houston police said. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 404 Oxford Street around 9:54 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, police said they learned there was a domestic disturbance between a man and woman. Police said the child, who was identified by her mother Brittany Sorrells as Khylie Sorrells, was shot in the head. Brittany was shot in the shoulder, according to HPD. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where police said Khylie was pronounced dead. “We know who the suspect is and we have units looking for him,” Lt. Horelica with HPD said. Horelica said the suspect has been identified as Jeremiah Jones, 22. Sorrells reportedly had not seen Jones in a few weeks and was warned by neighbors that he was there. Horelica said a fight ensued and the children were separated from their mother. Houston police said officers responded to a domestic disturbance call involving the child’s mother Jones. When officers arrived, they found Khylie shot in the head and her mother, Brittany Sorrells, with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Police said the little girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. The mother is hospitalized but is expected to survive. Jones has a criminal record and was already out on bond for felon in possession of a firearm. submitted by /u/Gary_Deller |
