I know, fireworks are illegal to possess and/or detonate in the city limits of Houston, so technically this does not apply to “most” of the Houston area. Still…

I live in the greater Houston area, in Harris County, where fireworks are legal.

I’d like to ask people who plan to convert cash into smoke this weekend to PLEASE extend a couple of common courtesies:

First, would you PLEASE not launch Roman candles or other aerial fireworks out in the street directly above all of our roofs? Sometimes these don’t go all the way up and end up on fire on our roofs.

Next, remember that a lot of us still have to get up early on weekends, and it would sure be nice if you didn’t keep blowing s**t up after 10 PM. Hell, I know midnight seems to be a big deal, too – makes sense on New Years but… 4th of July? Anyway, if you HAVE to blow them up at midnight, could you please try to keep it to less than 10 minutes worth, at midnight?

Finally, if you’re having a party and blowing up $1,000 worth of s**t in the street, don’t just leave all the debris out there.

Sure, it’s all biodegradable and it’ll wash into the storm drains with the coming rains… but that stuff won’t break down before it hits our bayous and it will make the bayous even trashier than they already are.

Personally, I’m praying for rain each night from dusk until all the fireworks owners are asleep. Burn your fireworks during the day when I’m at work. Sure, my dogs will get stressed, but you don’t care about that.
