I spent lots of time in Houston as a teen from 1970-78, and was very curious if anyone remembers my favorite fast-food place of that era.

It was called Across The Street, and I’m fairly certain it was on Kirby, just north of the SW Freeway. One thing made it unique: at each table, there was a red phone where you placed your order to the kitchen. On it was a light that buzzed when your order was ready, and you picked it up at the counter.

I’ve been a burger connoisseur for half a century, and I’ve *never* had one better. I like mine Pittsburgh style (healthy char on the outside, still a bit pink on the inside), and they got it just right. Also, burgers in those days were huge — nearly as big as a 45, requiring two hands, right down to the last bite. In any case, light years more satisfying than anything you can find today.

Any of you lifelong Houstonians remember that place?
