Anyone else concerned with NMBYs ruining Texas’s first high-speed rail??

It goes without saying that Houston has one of the worst public transportation systems in the entire United States. Cities with fewer people manage more ambitious public transportation systems. This bullet train to Dallas can fundamentally change the way Texans, and particularly Houstonians/ Dallas people, think about public transportation. If we fail to be ambitious in our demands, expect there to be more of our money wasted on expanding highway lanes, our land underutilized on parking lots, and sprawl to accelerate. Leaving behind a patchwork of suburbs and strip malls to what should be one of America’s best cities.

We need this train to fundamentally shake up the car-centric mindset of Houston. We cannot let cars dominate our city. I am not saying cars don’t have a place in our city. They do. But our priority as a city has to be more ambitious than 2-ton piece of polluting metal per person. I am so tired of seeing other cities walk by as our heads remain firmly buried in the sand. This is just a rant, but I do think we need people as vocal as these NMBYs in favor of this train to show that we really do support the project.

Markets to order Peking duck for Thanksgiving?

My husband and I just moved to the west Houston/ Katy area, and noticed a lot of vietnamese and chinese markets sell peking duck for like $18-$20 (like Viet Hoa). We’re thinking of getting one for Thanksgiving instead of a turkey. Has anyone done this before? Do you know of any markets where you can order/reserve one for Thanksgiving? I tired googling it, but it just shows restaurants.

Checking up on someone’s welfare

Hi /r/houston. I’m hoping I can get your help.

A friend of mine from just outside of Houston has been radio silent for the last week. Last Thursday, she sent a message which looking back is making me worried. She said that “everything is alright… so far” and then has been silent since about 2 hours after that. I haven’t been able to get a reply or her answering her calls which is wildly out of character.

I was wondering is there any way of checking up on people that I can do? I’m in Europe so I don’t think I’d be able to contact the police. Maybe if there was some community/neighborhood watch or something like that? I’m just very worried about her and I don’t have a direct way of contacting her family.

Thank you
