The draft occurred right before Gaine was fired.

I remember the reports were saying that Gaine was a BoB hire with the intent that the coach and the GM have the same vision. Rick Smith was fired due to a power struggle with BoB.

The reports then said that BoB was frustrated that Gaine couldn’t operate independently as BoB wanted to focus on the coaching side of things rather than babysitting Gaine.

We could kind of observe this in Gaine’s failure to retain KJax and resolve the Clownry situation. And a lot of people speculate that the Eagles jumped the Texans because of Gaine’s passivity (although obviously that worked out better for us).

It might have been a situation where BoB wanted to have his cake and eat it too i.e. he wanted a GM who shares his vision but could work independently, which is difficult since because if so, he would essentially need Gaine to read his mind.

It then makes sense that BoB finally realized that it was impossible to have both, and he begrudgingly accepted that he would have to be the GM if he wanted to run the team his way.

But this leads me to believe that BoB, even before Gaine’s firing, has been the de-facto GM for the Texans. Or at the very least after the firing of Rick Smith.

In that case, perhaps picks like Tytus Howard, Max Scharping, Justin Reid and Keke Coutee were all BoB’s picks. If that’s the case, then it seems like BoB is pretty alright at drafting. Maybe that’s why Cal McNair as so much faith in him as a GM.

Brett Kollman also speculated in a video that BoB traded Hopkins because BoB wanted full roster control and Hopkins was an independent guy who wouldn’t necessarily listen to everything BoB said (and rightfully so).

This is a helluva lot of speculation, but if it’s correct, it feels like maybe a lot of the puzzle pieces are starting to fall into place.
